About Danang Benevolence Association
Founded in 2006 by Lama Tsewang Tashi Rinpoche, Danang Benevolence Association is a nonprofit organization registered in New York City. Its mission is to support charitable and Buddhist initiatives that Tsewang Rinpoche had previously begun in Tibet, as well as to promote new efforts in North America.
Danang traces its beginnings as early as 1990, when Tsewang Rinpoche’s root guru Lama Kyabje Drupon Dechen Rinpoche appointed him abbot of Nenang Monastery, which was the main seat of Pawo Rinpoche. In the following nine years, Tsewang Rinpoche developed the monastery and its ordained community in accordance to the Kagyu lineage’s emphasis on study and practice. He served the local community by building an urgently needed school to provide six years of free basic education for underprivileged children. He also set up an orphanage and provided much financial support to the poor nomads in poverty-stricken parts of Tibet.
In 1999, Tsewang Rinpoche halted his religious and philanthropic work to escort His Holiness the 17th Karmapa into exile. Once in exile, however, circumstances did not allow Rinpoche to continue his work in Tibet. Despite this, he remains fully committed to serving the community, and promises to see through with them when the possibility arises.
In 2002, Rinpoche moved to the west coast of the United States, and was exposed to a materially well-off society with a contrasting hunger for spiritual well being. Reflecting that all sentient beings seek to increase happiness and reduce suffering, Rinpoche’s wisdom and compassion led him to establish Danang Benevolence Association to continue on with previous projects, as well as to reach out to benefit a wider spread of people.
Danang Benevolence Association is a non-profit Buddhist organization that seeks to fulfill the Buddhist values of benefitting all sentient beings. Currently, Danang concentrates its efforts in five areas:
1. Charity - provide financial aid to the orphaned, elderly, and disabled in Tibet.
2. Medical care – extend medical aid and services, health and hygiene education to rural and inaccessible areas in Tibet.
3. Education - scholarships and bursaries for lay and monastic education, and building retreat centres.
4. Culture Preservation – publication and distribution of religious texts, restoration and reconstruction of ancient Buddhist relics.
5. Miscellaneous Projects – projects that contribute to well being and peace, such as animal liberation and environmental protection.
Danang Benevolence Association aspires to develop branches in the world. With respect and mindfulness towards the diversity of cultures, Danang is committed to its efforts to benefit all sentient beings.
Your generosity is urgently needed to realize this aspiration. May the extension of Danang’s work beyond the Tibetan areas become a cause for all sentient beings to be liberated from suffering!
